This fall, 2 BESS (Bahamas Environmental Steward Scholars) students, Brian Higgs (F’11) and William Sturrup (F’11), attended The Island School. Now, this semester, as part of their full year BESS scholarship, they are interns at Bahamas National Trust and BREEF (Bahamas Reef Environmental Educational Foundation), respectively. Brian and William recently went on a two-week expedition, tagging turtles throughout The Bahamas. You can read about their trip here: BESS Newsletter.
This past weekend, 6 members from The Island School’s Alumni Advisory Board (AAB) made the trek to South Eleuthera for their annual on-island board meeting. During their few days at The Island School, they had the opportunity to connect with Spring 2012 students, as well as hear about everything that’s happening on the Cape, making sure that their alumni perspective is being heard both by staff and The Island School Board of Directors. All 6 attendees left the island with lots of energy to go home and spread the word of all the things they heard and learned this weekend.
The AAB was created in 2008 to reengage Island School alumni and add structure to the Island School alumni community that has spread from Eleuthera across the globe. The AAB promotes effective global citizenship by supporting connectivity and collaboration among the alumni community and through preservation of the mission and vision of the Island School for future students. Every student’s Island School experience is different, and with an ever-changing campus landscape and research scope many returning alumni are often confronted with a different school than they remember. The AAB works to ensure that all alumni feel connected to The Island School, regardless of miles traveled or time passed.

Since its creation just over one year ago, the Lionfish Research and Education Program (LREP) at CEI has strived to become a hub for lionfish work in the Caribbean. Recently, LREP has taken some exciting steps toward reaching this status! Just last week, CEI hosted three producers and videographers from ZED (www.zed.fr), a major French documentary company that is working on gathering footage for an upcoming TV series featuring invasive lionfish. Specifically, the documentary team was interested in learning about Bahamian lionfish research and management initiatives. Luckily, visiting scientist, and partner of LREP, Nicola Smith was able to come over from Nassau to support the week’s activities and be featured in the film! Nicola is the lead coordinator for the Bahamian-wide lionfish research project that operates under the Bahamian Department of Marine Resources (DMR) and partners with CEI.
ZED producer, Jerome Segur, sound engineer, Olivier Pioda, and underwater videographer (and former member of Jacque Cousteau’s prestigious dive team!) Didier Noirot, joined Nicola and LREP researchers in the field to get a closer look at lionfish and to better understand the project’s research objectives. Continue reading
Pam and Chris made their first trip out to California this week and had the opportunity to reconnect with old friends, as well as meet some prospective Island School students. Chip and Melanie Vetter (IS Parents of Anne (S’11) and Matt (S’09)) held a gathering at their home in Kentfield, CA. Over 40 prospective students, Island School alumni, faculty alumni, and friends were in attendance! Thank you to all who came out and especially to the Vetters for hosting such a great evening!

Lee Taylor (F’99), a student at Dartmouth’s Tuck School of Business, is the captain of a Dartmouth team that won the regional finals in Boston for the energy track of the Hult Global Case Challenge. This challenge is a business model/consulting competition intended to improve the success of solar power and lighting technologies in Africa. He and the rest of his team are presenting at the international finals in New York in April. We are excited to announce that our very own Katie Romanov (F05) has been declared the winner of America’s Next Eco-Star Competition through SmartPower! After a long process of voting and judging all the entries of the young energy leaders who have committed themselves to sustainable practices on campus and beyond, Katie has come out on top. We are so proud of you, Katie!
Prince Harry, during his recent visit to The Bahamas in celebration of the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, held a Youth Leaders Luncheon for a select group of outstanding students chosen for their exceptional leadership skills. Those in attendance represented several organizations throughout The Bahamas including three Island School alumni and one DCMS student were present at the luncheon. IS alumnae and BESS scholars Alannah Vellacot (F’08) and Truranda Cox (S’11), IS alumna Aly Boyce (F’10), and DCMS student Moesha Leary were among the lucky few to meet Prince Harry last week. They had the opportunity to discuss environmental initiatives with the Prince and had a great time!

It is with our deepest sorrow that we recognize the passing of long-time friend and supporter of The Island School, Walter Lovejoy. He passed away this December after an amazing life. Two of his grandchildren graduated from The Island School–Emily Lovejoy in Fall 2007 and Alex Lovejoy in Spring 2002. In honor of their passed grandson and IS alum, Walter & Susan Lovejoy started the memorial Alex Lovejoy Scholarship. Every semester, the Lovejoy family awards a merit scholarship to an Island School student. Our thoughts go out to the Lovejoy family during this time and we cannot thank them enough for all their support over the years.
