DCMS Grade 9 Learn to Scuba Dive

In SCUBA, I have learned and experienced a lot. I have come to love and enjoy the fun of SCUBA diving. SCUBA has become one of my favorite hobbies. I love the feeling of getting into the water with my classmates and exploring the underwater world of The Bahamas.

My instructors Captain Ron Knight, Karen Knight and Mrs. Walker make diving fun. The Deep Creek Middle School offers us Ninth Graders the opportunities to not only learn to such an interesting subject, but to become certified divers. We also learn about the physics of SCUBA in Science class. All of the equipment is provided by The Island School. Captain Ron and Karen Knight are really great instructors. It has been fun learning from the best. SCUBA diving is a big opportunity for all to explore the underwater world. I’m looking forward to becoming a certified diver.

Student Update November 20, 2012

Yesterday we had our final CO class with our DCMS buddies.  In Grade 9, we have been talking a lot about food on Eleuthera, and food in general, so our buddies came to Island School so we could watch a movie called King Corn.  The movie was about how a main ingredient of our diet is corn, and how corn has been genetically modified so it can be processed.  One thing from the movie that resonated with me was a scene where they took a piece of a man’s hair, and showed him that even his hair contained corn in it.  From soda to hamburgers to chips, most things that we are eating contain corn, and this is shown in our bodies.  We were not able to finish the movie and watch the section that talks about solutions to this problem, but I really enjoyed watching the movie because I didn’t even know how big of a problem this was.

After watching the movie, we went over to DCMS for the Basketball Jamboree.  [slideshow]We got out of the van, and the smell of conch fritters and fried chicken was in the air, music was playing, and kids were shooting around on the basketball court.  Continue reading

DCMS Grade 9 Visit US Boarding Schools

The Deep Creek Middle School supports some of our students as they apply for enrollment and scholarships at U.S boarding schools. Bronthaye Rolle (grade 9) writes about their recent trip:

We had awesome tours at all of the schools we visited. We had a great time during our trip. We visited Wilbraham and Monson Academy (MA), Lawrence Academy (MA), The Putney School (VT), Hebron Academy (ME), Berkshire School (MA), Vermont Academy (VT), The Darrow School (NY), Kents Hill (ME), and New Yarmouth Academy (ME). All of these schools were beautiful and filled with talented students. We came to love them and hope to be enrolled in one of them next year. Personally, I had a really fantastic trip. I know that by working harder, achieving Continue reading

Week 3 of Community Outreach

On Monday September 24th the entire student body of DCMS eagerly ran to the vans parked outside, in excitement for their weekly buddy visit with The Island School students. Together, The Island School students and DCMS students work on a service project for the community. The grade 8 DCMS class and their buddies are focusing on supporting a health initiative by local non-profit One Eleuthera. They are helping One Eleuthera design and conduct educational outreach for the organizations healthy eating and health gardens initiative.  This week the group learned about compost so that they could serve as the experts in later outreach events.

Experts at The Island School were interviewed by the students and provided excellent insight into each projects focus.  The grade 8’s started by working with Joseph, who brought students to “compost land” Continue reading

First Day of Community Outreach with Grade 9

In Community Outreach class this semester, grade nine DCMS students and their Island School buddies are tackling a topic that profoundly shapes all our of lives: food. How does food inform our cultural identities? How does what we eat affect our bodies and the environment? How do world events influence food availability? How is our current global food system unfair, and what can we do about it? By sharing home-cooked meals, taking field trips to farms, getting our hands dirty in the garden, and interviewing numerous Bahamian and international food experts, we look forward to exploring these questions.

We started things off today with a food scavenger hunt. In buddy pairs, students found examples of local and imported foods and interviewed Deep Creek farmers, storeowners, and residents—as well as had fun eating frozen tamarind cups and getting to know each other.

Check out these pictures of our first day!

DCMS Campers in New England

This summer DCMS grade 9 student, Lance Pelecanos, received a scholarship to return to Camp Dudley in New York for a month of camping fun and personal growth. He was very excited to once again be paired with lead counselor Tom McDonough (S’08).  Here is a picture of the gentleman outside of their cabin.

Many Deep Creek Middle School students spend their summers at camps locally and in New England.  The school and camps work to obtain sponsorships for the students and many Island School families support the program by hosting students on their way to or from camp, serving as chaperones, providing gear or sponsoring students.  Many thanks to the following families for their contributions this summer:

  • Family of Simon Mann-Gow (F08)
  • Family of Julie Thomsen (F07)
  • Christian Henry
  • Rachel Shapiro

If you would like to support DCMS campers in their future adventures, please contact principal Joanna Paul at joannapaul@dcmsbahamas.org

“What I learned at Summer Bridge”

by Dashae Clarke, DCMS Grade 7

What I learned at Summer Bridge was that the Deep Creek Middle School is different from all other schools, in Eleuthera and probably throughout the entire Bahamas. Bad behavior is treated much differently at Deep Creek Middle School. By using a system of color coded cards, such as red, orange and yellow. A green star is used to show you’ve been a good student.

Deep Creek Middle School hosts special events such as dances, field trips, sports, parties, scuba diving and other fun educational activities. Each child has a chore that helps the school to stay clean.

Normally, a Janitor or Janitress would do these things at any other Continue reading

DCMS’s Will Simmons Directs Another Successful “Space to Create”

Six years ago, Will Simmons, Deep Creek Middle School art teacher and Harbour Island native, started a non-profit arts summer camp on Harbour Island called “Space to Create”. During the 3-week program, the 100+ campers are exposed to dance, drama, theater, and visual arts, all taught by volunteers. At the end of the session, the campers put on a show for the community. You can read more about the final show, “Space to Create” and Will Simmons here. Congratulations on another successful summer, Will!

First Day of Summer Bridge at DCMS

School started this morning for Deep Creek Middle School seventh graders. 14 new students showed up in their starched uniforms, shy but ready for the changes of a new school. DCMS brings in grade sevens for a two week summer bridge program to help them get oriented to the school, teachers and their classmates.  We spend time teaching them the core values, expectations for community behavior, how to do chores, basic organizational skills and how to participate in community meeting.  Teachers also give introductions to their classes and the session culminates with their first field trip and swimming lesson at Wemyss Bight Beach.  School for grade 8 and 9 starts on September 3rd.

Deep Creek Middle School was opened by The Island School in 2001 as a way to give back educational opportunities to the local community.  Check out our webpage at www.dcmsbahamas.org to learn more.
