Reminder: Winter Receptions
We hope that many of you will be able to join us at our winter receptions this week in New York City (24th), Connecticut (26th), and Lawrenceville (27th). Find more information here. It was great catching up with alumni and families at the Cleveland and Boston receptions, and we’re looking forward to more successful events this week!
SPOTTED!
Fritter Cam
Since our EMZ crew has been out on the town chasing down all of the celebrities, we thought it was about time to give you an update on our hottest celebrity on Eleuthera since Mariah Carey got married to Nick Cannon and since Lenny K didn’t show up to something a while back: Fritter the Cat.

Alumni Spotlight–Charley Friedman (S04)!
Charley, a Spring 2004 alum, left The Island School inspired by the sustainable life style he lived during his 14-week semester on Cape Eleuthera. He spent his summers during high school working at Maine Sailing Partners, the state’s preeminent sailmaker. There he learned how to build and repair sails. When his grandfather’s old hand-me-down leather wallet eventually wore through, he sewed himself a new one, using scrap sailcloth from the sail loft and Chuck’s Cash Stash was born. What is unique about Chuck’s Cash Stash is the use of modern composite laminate cloth rather than the older yellowish/white Dacron or canvas used by other recyclers. Composite laminate cloth is perfect for wallets it’s: waterproof, thin, light, vegan friendly and it looks wicked cool. Continue reading
Alumni Gather in DC for All-Semester Reunion
More than 50 alumni gathered in Washington, DC on Saturday for our annual All-Semester reunion. Eight brave souls came out for morning exercise as the snow fell on the US capital. Maxey led these alums in a true Island School psycho, including wall climbing, somersaults, and IS-style jumping jacks. Check out the video here.
After some warm showers and hot coffee, our alumni thawed out and joined dozens of other alums for bagels and our speaker, Jason Heckathorn, who is the project manager of Lockheed Martin’s Mobile Fish Pens project. Jason spoke about the work that Lockheed has been doing to develop mobile aquaculture cages, and what this work could mean for the future of fish farming.

After lunch at the Old Post Office Pavilion food court, the group walked a short distance to the Spy Museum, where we learned all about the history of espionage.
The day ended with a cocktail party at Hook, where we enjoyed delicious seafood appetizers and catching up with old friends. Thank you to all who attended!
