Cacique Update May 22, 2011

Thanks for a great Parent’s Weekend! The last four days were an especially amazing as they allowed us to show our families and friends what relationships we have formed and what skills we have gained here at The Island School. Today, Sunday, was our first day after Parent’s Weekend. Most of the faculty joined all 48 of the students on an adventure to the Schooner Cays, a scatter of small islands off the Northwest side of the school. This was a time dedicated to decompression after a long parents weekend. We relaxed, reflected, rested, read, recuperated, rejuvenated, and PREPARED for the week ahead!

The first day of Parents Weekend was a great success. We started off the day with a sleep in and then circled at7:15for a campus clean to get ready for the arrival of the parents. After a long day of cleaning and classes the parents started arriving around five. Our hours of strenuous labor were ritually rewarded by the smiles on our families faces when they saw our magnificent art show. At an evening circle that was bursting at the seams with both happiness and family members, parents got a glimpse of our nightly ritual.

Today was a Tuesday, but this Tuesday was different from most Tuesdays, the reason being was because William Trubridge, the world record free diver had chosen The Island School as his next destination on his tour of The Bahamas. As the runners enjoyed a typical long morning run, the swimmers went with Mr. Trubridge to Cathedral rock where they learned to free dive, as run track had done the day before. After a good breakfast, which consisted of hash and grits, the students divided up and headed to either Human Ecology or Art class to set up for the Art show, which was happening in the Boys Dorm Common Room. When I write about The Island School, it no longer feels like I’m documenting an experience, but like I’m describing my home. The lethargic pace of a Sunday, an uncommon feeling around here, is like a deep breath during a busy schedule. We visit our usual spots around the Cape, and get the chance to enjoy each other’s company without the ominous, foreboding horizon of a deadline. With nothing to do, we are almost the most productive because we focus on each other, and although the day may not be so eventful, it is these memories that will stick with us. With a week full of parents and chaos, we enjoy the calm before the storm, even with all our excitement.

M-Morning Exercise hit us hard with Bizzaro Tracks. Swim Track ran the loop, Run Track Swam to the Triangle before sprinting at Water Polo.

A-After works outs, chocolate chip pancakes greeted us warmly in the Dinning Hall with a guest appearance from Granola.

Y-Yesterday’s homework proved helpful in class.  Math made connections as we calculated our latitude.  Continue reading

Although yesterday was a normal day of classes, we learned something unique in literature class. As we were sitting there wondering what we were going to talk about, David Miller showed us how Omeros could relate to our lives here at The Island School and also, our lives in general. In the chapters we’ve read recently, Walcott took a break from the story and revealed some of himself to the reader. Then he completed this journey and went back to the story of Omeros. This related to our kayaking journeys as we took a three week break from our regular class schedule. I remember standing around our 6:30 am circle waiting for everyone to depart. Continue reading

Today was the first academic day with the entireIslandSchoolstudent body reunited! It was a typical Monday, except for the fact that we kicked off our morning with a 3-hour Human Ecology Class. This was not a normal class.  We came up with ideas for our Human Ecology Final Projects.  Students thought of problems they saw around campus and also greater issues of Eleuthera and The Bahamas, and created a project to try to solve them.  It is cool to have a class where the work you are doing actually makes a change in the world. Cacique Update May 8, 2011

On Sunday, May 8, the Island School community was finally back together again; the Bahamian National Anthem was twice as loud, and the count off was twice as long. Having the day off was much needed in order to get back into the swing of Island School life. Despite the exhaustion caused by our action packed adventures and academics, there was an overwhelming aura of excitement on campus. Stories were exchanged, and Island School’s meals were eagerly devoured as we celebrated our eternal friendships. Our Island School family is finally back together, and the 10-day count down until parent’s weekend has begun.
