The day started off with a strenuous psycho led by the one and only Chris Maxey. The fearless leader led the 35 morning exercise participants along the downtown Harbor Walk (and through the snow!), stopping to do “Nellas”, dips, 8-counts, and of course everyone’s favorite, Island School jumping jacks. To say that we stood out and got a few strange looks would be an understatement!

After morning exercise, attendees had the opportunity to catch up with familiar faces and meet new friends before settling down with lunch to hear from our guest speakers. Cape Eleuthera Institute’s Edd Brooks spoke about his PhD shark research and his partnership with the New England Aquarium’s John Mandelman, PhD.

John focuses on the conservation physiology of marine fishes, predominantly elasmobranchs (the sharks, rays and skates) and their lethal and sublethal blood chemical responses to anthropogenic stressors – such as fishing capture and handling, and acoustic stress – in marine fishes. He is currently partnering up with Edd Brooks and CEI’s Shark Research & Conservation Program. Together they delivered a very interesting presentation that gave alumni an update on the type of research going on at CEI, and also how CEI is moving forward and partnering up with other successful organizations with the New England Aquarium. After Edd and John’s presentation, everyone had a chance to catch up some more, visit the Aquarium, and visit some of the aquarium’s scientists’ wet labs. At the end of the day, alumni left the Marriott and split into their respective semesters for dinner and other evening plans.

It’s reunion season! Summer is the best time of year to plan reunions and gatherings to bring together your Island School semester. Over the 4th of July holiday, 31 out of 47 members of the Fall 2011 semester traveled from far and wide to celebrate at AJ Wetherald’s home in Bristol, Rhode Island. Alumni traveled from California, Ireland, and even Australia to reunite with their friends from their semester! Yeah Fall 2011!

The course has been extended to encompass a more expansive network of land and sea features along the perimeter of Cape Eleuthera. Alumni, families, and friends of The Island School from close and far, please join us on-island to meet the challenge of a new course, designed to be longer, harder, and more intense than ever: more running, more swimming.

However, due to damages and unforeseen obstacles caused by Hurricane Irene in late August, the original plans for this reunion required some adjustment. Despite the various setbacks, The Island School was still more than happy to welcome back the small number of alumni who made the trek to Eleuthera last weekend. Gracie Payne (F’01), Patrick DiLoreto (F’04), John DiLoreto (F’08), Wes Mize (S’06), and Kevin Delaney (F’08) joined us for a weekend full of all things Island School!

We ran to High Rock and took the plunge, went out to the ooids sandbar, helped out with CEI’s shark research program, ate conch, spent the afternoon at Lighthouse, and danced the night away to the Rum Runners to celebrate Chris Maxey’s 50th birthday. It was great fun and we wish more alums had been able to join us. Thank you to everyone who came out and helped to pull this weekend off, in spite of mother nature. We wish all alumni many happy returns to Eleuthera!
